Insomnia: Symptoms and treatment
Insomnia is defined as the state in which a person perceives
his sleep as insufficient or unsatisfactory; in other words when the patient is
unable to benefit from the rest because sleeping too little or sleeping badly.
Insomnia is part of dyssomnia, a group of sleep disturbances
due to changes of pace, quantity and quality of sleep as well as sleep apnea
and hypersomnia (narcolepsy).
Another group of sleep disorders is that of parasomnias,
characterized by the presence of an abnormal and adverse event during sleep, or
in the stages of transition between wakefulness and sleep. Parasomnias are
sleepwalking, the somniloquy (talking during sleep), nightmares, enuresis
(involuntary urination), bruxism (teeth grinding), the restless legs syndrome
(involuntary movements of the legs and prolonged, which prevent 'falling
asleep).
